Auto-da-fé

From the 1986 New York City Opera production, also directed by Hal Prince. Get a load of the Grand Inquisitor. I saw this on tv as a kid, and it really messed me up: to add to the tension, Prince likes to repeat a musical phrase until it becomes grating or, in this case, kinda creepy.

  1. I also think this clip is slightly distrubing. The begining seems off with its festive feel. I interpreted Lisbon to be in total distress, but the crowd seems content and then happy to hear of the public executions. Also, the dancing that followed was strange from the dialogue to the costumes to the masks that reminded me of the KKK. Overall, I think this scene is different from the one Voltaire invisioned.
